Russian athletes who competed in the Sochi Olympics could be banned from competing in future Olympics if they failed to pass a series of tests.
The IOC’s World Anti-Doping Agency said Friday that the athletes will be banned for life from the games.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had promised in September to ban the country’s national team from the Winter Olympics, but the IOC’s decision to go ahead with the Games despite his assurances was met with widespread opposition.
Russian athletes, who have been banned from the Olympics for doping, were supposed to be in Sochi from Feb. 15 to March 8, but they will have to start competing in the Winter Games on Feb. 20.
